The role of jet quenching in the p̄ ≥ π − anomaly at RHIC

چکیده
Preliminary PHENIX data on Au+Au reactions at √ s = 130 AGeV suggest that p̄ yields may exceed π− at high pT > 2 GeV/c. We propose that jet quenching in central collisions suppresses the hard PQCD component of the spectra in central A + A reactions, thereby exposing a novel non-perturbative component of baryon dynamics. We suggest that baryon junctions provide a possible explanation of the anomalous component. We predict that the p̄ ≥ π− anomaly is limited to a finite pT window and decreases with increasing impact parameter.

High-pT Pion Quenching versus anti+Baryon Enhancement in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions
Jet quenching of quarks and gluons in central A + A collisions suppresses the high-pT meson production and exposes novel baryon dynamics that we attribute to (gluonic) baryon junctions. This mechanism predicts baryon enhancement in a finite moderate-pT window that decreases with increasing impact parameter. We also extend recent calculations of the transverse momentum behavior of p/π and p̄/π to...
متن کاملAnomalous Anti-proton to Negative Pion Ratio as Revealed by Jet Quenching at RHIC
We study the apparent discrepancy between the standard PQCD predictions for the meson and baryon ratios and multiplicities at moderate high pT > 2 GeV and recent experimental measurements in Au + Au collisions at √ sNN = 130 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We show that the differences, most pronounced in central collisions, can be explained by a strong non-perturbative baryon...
متن کاملM ar 2 00 7 Energy dependence of π ± , p and p̄ transverse momentum spectra for Au + Au collisions at √ s NN = 62 . 4 and 200 GeV
We study the energy dependence of the transverse momentum (pT) spectra for charged pions, protons and anti-protons for Au+Au collisions at √ sNN = 62.4 and 200 GeV. Data are presented at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.5) for 0.2 < pT < 12 GeV/c. In the intermediate pT region (2 < pT < 6 GeV/c), the nuclear modification factor is higher at 62.4 GeV than at 200 GeV, while at higher pT (pT > 7 GeV/c) the m...
متن کاملJet-Medium Interactions with Identified Particles
Identified particles have long been of great interest at RHIC in large part because of the baryon/meson differences observed at intermediate pT and the implications for hadronization via quark coalescence. With recent high statistics data identified particles are also now central to understanding the details of the jet-medium interactions and energy loss and hadron formation at intermediate and...
متن کاملJet quenching as a probe of gluon plasma formation
We study, in a pQCD calculation augmented by nuclear effects, the jet energy loss needed to reproduce the π spectra in Au+Au collisions at large pT , measured by PHENIX at RHIC. The transverse width of the parton momentum distributions (intrinsic kT ) is used phenomenologically to obtain a reliable baseline pp result. Jet quenching is applied to the nuclear spectra (including shadowing and mult...
